From the Latin for "star" (astra), the asterisk sits quite neatly on the top row of your keyboard and comes in very handy for drawing people's attention to information located   elsewhere on a page. They're especially useful for finding out whether that too-good-to-be-true offer really is just that ... have a hunt for the asterisk and you'll normally find out that that ultra-cheap airfare is a little more that the listed price says, and that you'll be needing to flog off a kidney in order to afford that holiday after all.
