The bane of every teenager's existence, blackheads form when oils, sebum and cellular fragments (that's "gunk" to the uninitiated) block up your follicles, most commonly on your nose. Along with

whiteheads, they make up the variety of acne known as "comedones" and the distinctive blackness is a result of the oxidisation of melanin. Urgh ... all this talk about blackheads makes me want to grab the nearest cleanser and scrub like buggery (or get one of those new fangled rippy-outty plastery things).
