The daisy's Latin name, Bellis perennis, comes from bellis meaning beautiful, so Bellis perennis can be translated to   "perennial beauty". Or bellis may come from bellum, Latin for war, because it grew on battlefields and can staunch bleeding and reduce bruising and shock. The ickle daisy is best known for its association with children however ... and being made into ickle chains. JD
