While elves appear in a variety of other fantastical situations (Middle Earth anyone?), they come into their own at Christmas as the diminuitive, underpaid workforce of one Mr S. Claus.   The reality that that workforce is most likely a bunch of diminuitive, underpaid South-East Asians seems to be lost on most people caught in the retail mayhem that is Christmas. Still, there's a lot to be said for dressing in green velvet and wearing tiny bells on the ends of your shoes ... or so I've heard. DP
