The humble full stop (also known as the period to our yank cousins, but we're not going to call it that, because we feel ridiculous saying "And then I went to the shops period" - we might as well be saying "He got out his wallet cramps", which just sounds
  dumb, frankly, even if the fact that we choose not to say it makes us appear like eleven year olds) is often overlooked, but serves a very useful function - singly, it can bring to a close a sentence or statement, or as part of a trinity, it can serve to lead the reader on, leave things hanging in the air ... of course, it also serves as a handy reminder to breathe when reading out loud. Tiny dot. Big impact.
