Referred to in hoity toity circles as "non pareils" ("without equals") and as "sprinkles", "spreckles" and "jimmies" in others, hundreds and thousands are small, multi-coloured balls of sugar used to decorate cupcakes, coat the tops of the

eponymous pink-iced biscuits and as a vital component of fairy bread (take one piece of sandwich-sliced white bread, cut off crusts, butter lightly, sprinkle liberally with hundreds and thousands, cut diagonally and serve). Apparently they've been in use since the early 1800s and kids' blood sugar and hyperactivity levels have never been the same since.
