 Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the eukaryotic cell. Having its own DNA and protein synthesizing capabilities, this little entity is thought to be a direct descendant of bacteria that entered primitive eukaryotic cells. Nowadays they provide for cellular respiration, transforming ADP into ATP. This is a good thing. The ickle organelle measures in at 1 micron in length. MB |
