Nanites - the fictional term used in certain science fiction to describe the tiny robot builders of tomorrow - have been floating around the heads of   forward-thinking individuals since physicist Richard Feynman dreamed up the whole concept back in 1959. He envisaged a world where these icklest of human artifacts would construct anything you like, from the first atom up, in a process known as "bottom-up nanotechnology". I'll drink to that! DP
