Found on most species of fish, scales act as natural protection for those swimming creatures lucky enough to possess them.   They're classified into four exotic-sounding varieties: placoid, cosmoid, ganoid and cycloid/ctenoid - with certain species (such as some flatfish) having two different types and even different kinds between the sexes!
