Although they can be any size really, smudges are most annoying when they're small. Like the ones you get   when you move a finger within even close proximity to that anti-glare coating on your specs. Or when you blur your best printing on a birthday card because of the crazy ink-repelling surface they seem to coat the inside with. They're frustrating to say the least. DP
