From the time Neanderthal man first struck two pieces of flint together, to the present day fascination with pretty pyrotechnics,
  sparks have been with us since the dawn of history. They are, however, not without their dangers - my childhood blue velour sweater was instantly ruined when a potent ember flew out of the fire and onto its back. It was a crushing blow for juvenile fashion, I assure you.
