It's rather innocuous, isn't it? Just a little puddle with a few bubbles in it. Sometimes it has a bit more colour - yellow or green are the most common. If it wasn't every-freaking-where on the   streets of Xiamen I would probably never notice it. It's spittle, and in China it's perfectly acceptable to dredge up as much saliva and phlegm as you can manage, in order to expel it with the greatest of trajectories, with no concern as to where it lands, be it on the road or another person. SARS? It happens to people in other cities! AS²
