Whilst most commonly used in connection with herbs (and parsley in particular), sprigs can apparently also refer to small, headless nails or young, immature people. Down this end of the world, they   also describe the protruberances on the soles of rugby players boots, designed to provide a modicum of traction in the muddy, winter fields on which the game is generally played. As such, they're the bane of homemakers everywhere when a mass of Swiss cheese style mud is tracked around the house following the regular Saturday game. DP
