 Umlauts (which are a kind of diaeresis, as any linguistic type would tell you) consist of only a couple of tiny dots |
but they radically change the sound of any vowel they perch above - a process which goes by the charming name of "vowel mutation". However, as I'm sure anyone can tell you, I'm more than capable of mutating my vowels without needing to resort to umlauts. DP |
