tick, tick, tick

At the heart of traditional timepieces lie the gears - those small-toothed discs of
  metal which constantly tick around and around, marking the passage of time as they do so. Theirs is a design which dates back to around the fourteenth century and still takes its place on millions of the world's wrists to this very day.
