If you can get past the hundreds of little eyes staring up at you from your plate, then whitebait are apparently quite a   good feed. In fine New Zealand tradition, the little blighters (juvenile Galaxias maculatus generally) are thrown together with a couple of eggs and some salt and pepper to create the delicacy known as the whitebait fritter. Me, I can't quite get past the eyes. DP
