Does anyone else share my revulsion at Comic Sans MS? I'm almost getting to the point where if I even see it on a page, I hit the back button - check out this Microsoft induced monstrosity for a prime example (but, as always, I guess it's just a matter of personal taste).

I'm in a Kvetch-y mood today ... looks like it's time to go vent ...

More on mags ... try Shift, billing itself as "for living in digital culture". I've yet to see the print version about but the online one's pretty slick.

I came across a pile of old magazines yesterday which someone had left in reception with an Alice-In-Wonderland-style "Help yourself" note attached. So I did. The only one of any interest though was a little American 'zine called Stay Free: a culture jammer rag which has been quite a good read (along the lines of Adbusters).

Speaking of Adbusters, they have an interesting new campaign on the commercialisation of graphic design. Well worth a look.

Nathan Shedroff offers some solid, sound principles behind personal site design in this missive: much food for thought.

Simson Garfinkel (great name!) posits a few interesting scenarios in "Excuse me, are you human?" at Salon Technology ... just when you thought spam couldn't get any worse, a new twist may be just around the corner (yikes).

An indispensible addition to any web designer's (or web dabbler's (like me)) arsenal of tools: the Visibone Webmaster's Color Lab.

Mergers mergers everywhere! The EMI / Warner merger is big news to me, probably because I worked in the retail music biz for such a long time (we thought that the Universal / Polygram merger was huge a few years ago but this blows it out of the water). One immediate downside: more work for underappreciated shop staff adjusting the myriad of stock files created by these two companies' artists (trust me ... been there, done that!).

It looks as though Miramax's marketing push for "Scream 3" is going to be huge, with the web direction heading along the lines of "The Blair Witch Project". The back-story they've created for Sunrise Studios (where the ever resilient Sidney works) is massive: apparently the studio's previous films include "Space Psycho" and "There's Something About Carrie"! (I'm thinking RKO for the 21st century here). Also featured are the "Stab" movies, which are based on the events in the first two "Scream" flics: it's all very twisted and meta, trust me.

Not content with that, the Miramax people have even created a hilarious site for Gale Weathers, the trilogy's feisty investigative reporter. Talk about blurring the lines!

Now then, count the zeroes with me ... 1,000,000,000. That's the number of unique web pages in existance according to Inktomi's Webmap. Kinda makes me feel small. Anyway, I got shivers looking at the longest domain name they found (brace yourself) ...

http://www.tax.taxadvice.taxation.
irs.taxservices.taxrepresentation.
taxpayerhelp.internalrevenueservice.
audit.taxes.com

So now there's three certainties in life: death, taxes, and incomprehensible tax-related URLs.

When chromosomes attack! Find out what happens when celebrities breed out of control in "If They Mated" (cue ominous sounding music).

Content isn't just king, it's God. I managed to lose myself late last night in Mike Carr's site - an awesome array of content if ever I saw one. Keep up the good work Mike and remember ... "For centuries, the stars have given us guidance ..."

I first came across Blair years and years ago and even though six issues have only ever been produced, it's some of the funniest stuff I've ever read! Sure it's a load of camp old nonsense but hey, who ever said that was a bad thing?

Yeah I know it's an occupational hazard, living in New Zealand and all, but if I hear the phrase "first X of the millenium" just one more time, I think I'm going to implode. We even had the "first albatross chick of the millenium" splashed over the media a few days ago. Sheesh ... at least someone agrees with me!

Also, I finally managed to drag myself back to the flics yesterday (after an extended megamix absence) to see Sleepy Hollow with Sarah. I didn't really know what to expect before going in but it was pretty sweet - another expertly surreal tale to add to Tim Burton's stable and good performances all round (4/5 Jaffas).
