Tom has started a chain letter/manifesto to end all: go and mail him (or me) for a copy this instant!

A couple of weeks back I mentioned a "Monkey" revival going on around our studio but it looks like the lads have moved on to ... Terrahawks. I'm reserving comment on this one.

Awww ... isn't it cute? It's the Pet of the Day.

I received this story this morning ... chances are it's done the rounds a hundred times already and it's more than likely apocryphal, but I thought it was quite good.

The south London sky for most of this afternoon has been a bizarre purple/orange combination - sort of like Barbelith in reverse. Pollution or natural phonomenon ... who can tell?

I caught a quick performance by Ultra Naté over the weekend (she had the crowd up-and-at-'em) and watched Fight Club again (well worth it for the closing scene alone).

A very tasty site dedicated to New Zealand music (some of which I believe I have waiting for me in my birthday parcel from home - on strict instructions, not to be opened until the day itself (28/06)).

And from the sublime of NZ sites, to the ridiculous ... please don't buy these God awful scarves.

24.6.00 / 0 comment(s)

How ridiculous is it, in this day and age, that a TV channel can be ordered to move its nightly news bulletin from 11pm to 10pm? There's no denying we live in a media-saturated society ... surely people know where to go to find out what's happening in the world without the need for some third party to dictate (in their infinite wisdom) when they should get that information. Sheesh.

Caroline on kiwifruit ... I must admit to never having heard of the yellow ones before. On the European "zespri" site she comments:

"The European one also typically focuses on the fact that it's NEW (as in NOT OLD and certainly not OLD WORLD) and from NEW ZEALAND, i.e. 'it comes from far away, so it's good for ya'."

Just like me ;)

The south-positioned Millennium Bridge webcam gives a nice, user-controlled shot of the office: I work in the white stepped building (Mondial House) behind the row of air-conditioning vents (those black window-looking things in the middle) ... come and visit if you like.

A large Wagamama craving has just hit ... must make it there within the next week or so methinks. Along with the equally delicious food, Kirin is the best tasting beer I've had since I've been in London.

A fun night was had last night (with about ten of the usual suspects) playing teenybopper at the grandiosely titled "Pepsi Chart Event". Several pitchers of "Woo Woo" (vodka, cranberry and peach schnapps) later, we went and hammed it up on camera behind this guy which was fun ... the evening's best conversation went something a little like this:

Kara (resident 'dosser' at our flat): "Hi."

J (aforementioned boy-band member): "Hi."

Kara: "Umm ... I don't really have anything else to say to you."

Ahhh ... summer weekends. Drinking on the South Bank on Friday night - the Thames and surrounds were fantastically lit up - then it was off to see a certain petite pop princess on Saturday night and a well deserved roasting on Sunday. Does life get much better?

A panoramic view of Westminster/Waterloo from Feed's excellent "Street Level" special issue: the accompanying copy rings true ... "[T]here are landmarks in all directions, of course, but what is striking is how difficult it is to pick out the so-called sights from the enveloping mass."

Interesting design point for the day: the narrow vertical banner ads used throughout beme.com. It sounds strange (because the concept seems so obvious) but I don't think I've ever seen this done before.

Two late nights + an 8am start this morning = one tired Dave. Never mind, t'was well worth it: out playing the larrikin with the crew on Friday, then the 21st on Saturday which was a roaring success. The look on the birthday boy's face was priceless, bless 'im, and he loved the present too which is always a relief.

Always good for a laugh is the Ask Jeeves Take a Peek which shows those questions most recently asked of the man himself. Some of the many gems: "What is the Internet?" (try opening your eyes), "Where can I see pictures of gloves?" (each to his own, eh?) and "Where can I find Florida?" (right where you left it buddy).

I can't believe I'm going to a 21st birthday party on Saturday ... it was only five years ago that I partied hearty in that way but it seems like a lifetime ago. Of course, I'm absolutely stuck for present ideas for the lad in question: at least he can be assured of not getting anything as tacky as these.

The world is well overdue for a "Monkey" revival if you ask me.

Fascinating facts from the vaults of the US Bureau of Printing and Engraving:

"The origin of the "$" sign has been variously accounted for, however, the most widely accepted explanation is that the symbol is the result of evolution, independently in different places, of the Mexican or Spanish "P's" for pesos, or piastres, or pieces of eight. The theory, derived from a study of old manuscripts, is that the "S" gradually came to be written over the "P," developing a close equivalent of the "$" mark. It was widely used before the adoption of the United States dollar in 1785."

An excellent article on the story of Pope Joan: what's most interesting is the way the tale has mutated over various incarnations of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

On the corner of Cannon Street and Walbrook (intersection in the top left corner of this pic) is a statue of a man talking into a cell/mobile phone - I've yet to read the inscription but it's kind of a bizarre concept. Was the first ever call on a mobile made here? Or is it a monument to global telecommunications dominance? Stay tuned for details.

Recent object of my affection: the Sony PMC-DR45L ...

> sony pmc-dr45l

The sound out of this little baby is fantastic (perfect for my 'so small you can only just swing a dead cat'-sized room) and Moby's "Play" sounds brilliant. Why that album sat around doing barely any business for so many months is quite beyond me.

Marketing people sure know how to throw a good bash: TimeSmart (one of the sites I've been working on) had a belated launch party last night and a good time was had by all. My head feels like it's been stuffed with cotton wool and my lungs feel like they've been put through a cheese grater but apart from that, I'm fine.

The venue was Tokyo Joe's (just off Piccadilly) which was kind of like drinking in the TWA orbital lounge from 2001: A Space Odyssey (yellow modular furniture enthusiasts would've had a field day). And the evening's tipple of choice? Absolut Kurrant and cranberry juice. Mmmm. The "open bar" concept is truly a dangerous thing.
