For some reason, it's much more fun to read e-mail from friends (for example South African ones) in the accent they'd use if they were actually there talking to you. How's your English?

Fellow Londoners ... a fun new game for you to play! I call it ... "Tube Haiku". The rules are pretty simple: just make up a haiku about the person sitting across from you the next time you take a trip on that fabulous underground contraption. And don't forget to mail me your haiku! My first effort:
Sushi girl on tube
Eat black seaweed, rice, soy sauce
Hide your shame at it
My flatmate's effort:
Haiku haiku
I do not like you
Haiku
I think he missed the point somewhat.

Proof positive that some people have nothing better to do with their time: The Big List of Movie Mistakes. Take this example:
"In the scene where Austin and Vanessa are unpacking in the hotel room and he suggests that they shag, she reminds him that they are only sharing a room on the 'context' of being husband and wife. The word she means is 'pretext'."Oh dear.

An old work buddy from NZ took me on a surprise trip to the theatre (and yes, you have to pronounce it "thee-ar-tar" to have any posh cred whatsoever), to see "An Inspector Calls": an entertaining yarn with a bizarre little ending.

So "Big Brother" started last night ... looks like it'll be an interesting time for all concerned. It had a very "first day at school camp" feel to it, which is understandable I guess and the women were a lot more interesting than the men - maybe I should be meeting some more English women?

On the weekend, I finally finished the 910 page epic that is Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon": an enjoyable geeky romp, written with a lot of humour on a subject which had the potential to be quite dry, "Boys Own Annual" stuff. Well worth a look.

Despite the inherent limitations of surveys, it's still quite disturbing to think that a quarter of those Britons polled by "Which?" don't ever intend going on-line. Saying the internet is "irrelevant" is like saying Shakespearean works are irrelevant because they were written hundreds of years ago. Derive your own meaning, please.

9:45 New Series
Choo-choo Metalface Shinefright Assembly
"Eerie gameshow in which contestants dressed as schoolchildren gather on an abandoned railway platform at 3am and take turns shining a torch through the windows of a passing train carriage in an attempt to illuminate the face of a man wearing a featureless metal mask before he can finish carving an unsettling poem onto a wax dummy's chest with an unwashed razorblade."

I'm sure you can track global climatic changes by watching old footage of Wimbledon finals - the parade o' champions thing they screened during the rain breaks yesterday showed a lot of vintage clips and yes, the players battled it out in brilliant sunshine! (up until recent years that is). At least the English have a penchant for talking about the weather as much as we do back home.

It's fun to read about Mark's adventures in London ... I've only been here a few months myself but you do kind of forget what a culture shock it is (and moreso for an American I'd imagine). I initially promised myself that I'd chronicle my adventures here but it seems to have fallen by the wayside a bit (add another "note to self" to the pile).
Tom and Katy (the George and Mildred of weblogging? ;)) have also been logging their encounters with Mark (N.B. No permalinks here as they're all great logs which deserve a thorough reading anyway!).
