I ventured into Mayfair last night with Andrew to see that cinematic masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey". Despite me being a bit dozy for the first half, the film itself was as spectacular as I remembered it (even moreso in a 70mm print with booming sound).

The best description I can give it is "art": every shot was painstakingly created and placed by Kubrick (as he was wont to do) and because of this, you have the impression throughout that you're viewing art as you would in a gallery. Some people label this a "cold feeling" which pervades the movie, but I think it just allows more of an opportunity to marvel: technology, hubris, death, wonder. The spontaneous round of applause as the star-child finally faded from the screen said it all.
