Great apes in peril: Now, I'm by no means a dedicated conservationist, but growing up in New Zealand does make you a little more attuned to the plight of endangered species (we've got dozens of them). It's an amazing shame that great ape numbers have been allowed to dwindle so badly - you almost have the feeling you can't look them in the eye, as I had the chance to do whilst at Berlin's Zoologischer Garten. We homo sapiens have a lot to answer for.
