A few more weekend happenings ...
Saturday was weird but entertaining! I was feeling reasonably jaded all day after the previous two nights efforts so thought a spot of afternoon consumerism may help. It did. I'm now the proud owner of (amongst other things) a Kodak EZ200 digital camera. It takes pretty good pictures even in low light (with a bit of touching up in Photoshop), doubles as a webcam and takes ten second .avi clips. Not bad for £79.95!
I shuffled along that evening to flatmates Byron and Briar's farewell drinks in Wandsworth and started to feel verrry sleeepy after a couple of pints. Assorted punters were attempting to drag me out to Bagley's but I thought, nah, bugger that ... despite being as tired as sin I'll haul it to Heaven. Let "Freaky Coincidence Night" begin!
- The whole time I was there I kept thinking "Andy and David are here" (whom I haven't seen for weeks), and sure enough, around 3am, they stroll past. Weird.
- Andy says "You look like you've lost weight in your face" and I rationalised it as my wisdom teeth not having played up recently. As soon as I say down in easyEverything to kill a few hours after the club had closed, I had a prolonged shooting wisdom tooth pain. Ouch.
- While reading blogs, I visited plasticbag.org - now, easyEverything use Netscape4 (urgh) and I thought "Tom, this doesn't look as good as it does in IE" (I'm guilty of that as well). The next thing I read was this. Bizarre.
Sunday was mostly spent recovering and then onto a fun evening chez Meg and Luke in honour of the Australian's clock ticking over once more. I'll now indulge you with the whole documentary film-making thing ... ya know, just because I can - the evidence is here.

Ahh, blogmeets ... nothing quite like infusing yourself with large amounts of alcohol (including this one's eponymous concoction) and meeting now slightly-less-random people (fresh cohorts to the left) to ensure a fine close to the week and a great start to the weekend. Hazy evidence is available here (you're right Meg, I am going to kill you!). See you all there next time ... if not sooner!

Some bright spark in lastminute.com's marketing department has come up with the Office Flirt Test - looks like your bog standard personality quiz but the last sentence of the results page is a variation on this theme:
The only problem is that a reputation like yours can frighten people off before you get a chance to make your move - if you need some help softening them up first, click here. The "click here" takes you to lastminute.com. You're also encouraged to "find out how flirty your friends and colleagues are" by mailing them a link to the site. A cunning stunt indeed - there'll be more of this in the future, I'd expect.

I've just spent an interesting lunchtime out flat-hunting round FinchleyValeWood ... things are a lot different to me old schowdent days, that's for sure. Back then, 95% of houses within a three to four block radius of the campus were re-let each year, so it was a simply matter of practicising your best charity collector impersonation, picking the street you wanted to live on, then trawling from one end to the other door-knocking and asking if the flat was free for the following year. Simple.
So anyway, after viewing a boxy canal-facing number and watching a group of death-defying American tourists nearly get themselves run over a dozen times on the crossing, we proceeded on to two reasonably good flats. It's hard to tell what's good and what isn't - I'm out of the loop on this whole flat-hunting thing really (having spent two years in the same place in Dunedin before coming over, then walking into the room I'm in now as soon as I arrived over here). I guess it's just a "go with your gut" feeling ... some places cut it, others don't.

Radio 1 relaunch their site: what could have been the perfect opportunity to ditch the clunky old "forever-to-load" format hasn't happened - it's still as frustratingly slow as ever (and I'm on a speedy work connection). Still, there's a fair few new features to keep the proles happy and an entertaining

I have just partaken of the Devil's food: Maynards limited edition alcoholic-flavoured wine gums. The delightful flavours included "White Wine Spritzer", "Vodka n' Lime", "Strawberry Dacquiri" and, truly the mingiest concept ever to grace the annals of confectionery, "Sangria". I know they're the Devil's food because I scoffed the whole damn tube. Ugh. He made me do it. Curse you, Angel of Darkness!

'Ey oop, mi ducks! So how was Nottingham I hear you ask? Well, "muchus funnus" would sum it up nicely! Yes, as mentioned on Friday, I headed up for a taste of the Midlands over the weekend with club buddy Wade, staying with school buddies Tracy and Mike and, as anticipated, a great time was had by all.
Friday saw us hit the town, starting at the Pitcher and Piano (a purported £2,000,000 revamp of a massive old church to fantastic results), moving on to Indigo to warm up a little, then on to superclub Media for their "Traffic" evening (funky US & UK house). The club itself is spectacular - as a teen, I always had a vision of a theatre transformed into a nightclub and Media sees it realised. Gorgeous! Six of your English pounds to get in and unbelivably cheap drinks once you were inside: the first round was mine and four Breezers + a glass of wine came to only £11 (pick jaw up off floor David). Highly recommended.
After Saturday brunch, we headed to Nottingham Castle (which was odd in a "not really a castle at all" kind of way) then to the shops for a look-see. Saturday's dinner was a tasty Japanese number from the Skinny Sumo, then it was on to The Mill - a cosy gay pub - for one or two. Tracy was hit on by the barmaid (much to her, erm, "delight"?) and it was nice to see the "lesbians round the pool table" tradition extending half way round the world too! Some things never change :) After freezing our collective arses off in the queue for the "Hotdog" night at the apparently Morrocan-inspired The Lost Weekend, we ditched the continuating wait and returned to Media for "Renaissance" (scroll down). Another great evening of progressive house, sore legs, and satisfied bellies.
Sunday was another rise-late morning, followed by a jaunt to Sherwood Forest, home of a large oak tree and quite possibly the world's tackiest visitor's centre. Excellent stuff. So on the whole, an excellent city: friendly punters, good value, great times with excellent friends. What more could a wee Antipodean want?

Following Luke's lead, I've been revisiting Weezer's excellent "Pinkerton". Maybe it's just the day, but a lot of the songs have great counter-relationship material. For example, track eight, "Pink Triangle":
I'm dumped, she's a lesbianTop quality!
I thought I had found the one
We were as good as married in my mind
But married in my mind's no good
Oh, pink triangle on her sleeve
Let me know the truth

The old varsity gang dutifully trundled along to The Bull & Gate in Kentish Town last night to cheer on one of our own: Duncan was playing gee-tar in a band called Junkwax. They weren't too bad ... a mix of Blondie, The Cranberries and The Cure (if that makes any sense) but I think the singer was having a bad voice day. They were sandwiched between an angsty teen band (great voice on the singer though) and a bluesy M.O.R. rock number, both of whom were pretty good too. For £4, an entertaining night out!

Truly cringe-making tales from the front lines of ISP tech support. These remind me of the notebook of ridiculous queries we used to keep at the music store I worked in in New Zealand (honestly, for our own sanity, we had to do it). To wit:
Punter: "Do you guys sell cigarettes?"My sister (who used to work there as well) once got this classic:
Staff member: "Why yes, they're over in the combine harvester section."
Punter: "Do you have that song with "love" in it?"<blink>Argh!</blink>
Michelle: "Erm ... I think we may have something like that out the back."

"The Weakest Link" hits Australia: look it's Sister Scott as Anne Robinson! For those of you who are curious:
"Perhaps best of all was Cornelia Frances who portrayed strict and officious Sister Scott, the bane of the nurses who worked for her. Frances stayed in the role three years and when she left Sister Scott was killed when a faulty lift failed to arrive as the doors opened, and she absent-mindedly stepped into the shaft and fell to her death."I couldn't think of anyone better. Oh dear God ... "The Young Doctors" flashback in progress ...

A quiet day today - at home working because of the tube strike. By all accounts a shocking day of disruptions right across the capital (let alone for those who were physically assaulted as they tried to get to work - big hugs to Meg!). After living under the now repealed Employment Contracts Act for most of the 1990s, you kind of forget what these things are like.
