The first leg of the three day birthday hoo-ha went off well last night - the troops were mustered and instructed to gather at Yo!Below on Poland Street for an extended imbibing and chin-wagging session (pics can be found here). I was spoilt thoroughly rotten by everyone - to those who read this and were there, copious expressions of gratitude go out to you all! Yo!Below has Kirin on tap at each table which was absolutely genius - no need to get up to go to the bar, just drink yourself steadily into a drunken stupor from the comfort of your recessed table. Qualidee. Chi-chi Japanese venues then gave way to a drum and bass session at Bar Rumba. I guess I just need to be remined every now and then how much I hate drum and bass. Urgh. As a genre it helped of course to spawn the almost-as-evil 'garage' and as such, must be avoided in the future at all costs. Overall though, last night was a great way to turn twenty-seven. Bring on the late-twenties crisis ... I'm ready!

CAP reviews are, quite simply, hilarious. The South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut one has been floating around for ages but it's worth another look:
"Body parts dripping with blood were ripped from a child by a surgeon who expressed shallow concern. The dead child was then seen with an exploded chest. The dead child, after being rejected from Heaven (by nude female angels) and cast into Hell, was then presented as a ghost trying to influence the other kids. An all-male chorus line wore pink bikini briefs. Homosexual acts were described. Decomposing burned bodies were cast as live occupants of Hell. "Big brother" electronic shock control of a child was used to prevent his use of foul language (each time he cussed he was shocked -- he used this shock later to defeat Hussein by shouting every known and several unknown foul words)."I still maintain that "Barbara Streisand" is not an unknown foul word.

Daring to bare all: Can you sponsor this guy to keep his clothes on? Best quote: "Occasionally, I'd get shouts of encouragement from the other prisoners, such as 'Oy, naked guy' and 'Keep it real'. I'm not sure what that means, but I think it's bit of gang slang." Reee-spect.

Birthday wishes go out to my birthday twin Jen, who sent an e-card with an accompanying mail that went like this:
Hi davo,
jen has sent you a free e-card from Wicked Moon!

Everyone knows about the risk of stomach problems with anti-inflammatory drugs. However, a new Australian study has just shown that seniors who take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), other than low-dose aspirin, are twice as likely to be admitted to hospital with congestive heart failure than non-users:
http://by.advertising.com/1/c/22818/23990/70763/70763
-----------------------------------------------------
Of course, I didn't read it correctly so I assumed that that first link was to the e-card itself ... nothing says you're old like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, don't you think?

Day 9862 in the Big Daver life: Dave wakes up at 8am to a phone call from New Zealand and a couple of text messages. After opening the funky present from his housemate Meg, he potters off to the shower. Emerging, Dave has to answer the electricity man at the door. Finally, he leaves the house and realises he's forgotten to shave. As a special birthday treat, Big Daver has decided to throw him a Japanese-themed party, complete with sushi, Kirin and new gambling opportunities. However, this has been done on the condition that he makes it through the day first. Due to the difficulty of this task, Dave has only wagered 5% of next week's shopping budget on its successful completion ...

Further discussion from last night: Debate raged when the topic of toasted sandwiches came up. Okay, make a sandwich and grill both sides. What have you got? A toasted sandwich. Fine. But what do you get if you use an electric sandwich maker. You get a toasted sandwich again, my companions said. No, no, I replied. You get a toastie pie. It's a pie because the edges are sealed. Or something. Arguments commenced. And then the Australian piped up with, "No, it's a Jaffle", at which point we killed her.

As Meg has attested, late-night shopping is a Good Thing. After a complicated, frustrating day at work and a few beers, a spot of retail therapy cheered me up immensely. Especially when it was Madge's "Ray of Light" and especially when your bargain-hunting mates can find you a copy marked at £7. I'd forgotten how danceable this album actually is - William Orbit produced it to perfection and did a much better job than that dodgy French geezer on the latest offering I reckon.

Psycho 'most thrilling film ever': The top ten of the American Film Institute's annual one hundred list make for strange bedfellows indeed. Despite this, they do force you to look at what exactly it is that makes a movie "thrilling". Psycho is thrilling for that scene alone; ditto Alien. The Birds is reasonably thrilling, avian stylee, in spite of what is possibly the worst ending in film history. And Rosemary's Baby? Well, that's thrilling for an entirely different reason ...

In a fascinating move by the BBC, Doctor Who is to be resurrected for a thirty minute, online only broadcast. I have good childhood memories of the Timelord in question (an after-school staple) so it will be interesting to see if these stand up to the test of time - the series were never in New Zealand in the 1990s, so my attachment currently stands at the level of "fond nostaglia". It will also be interesting to see whether the "radio" format itself will work (my suspicion is that it will).

Distressing news: Automatic Media has ceased operations. Thus, two of the web's finest reads, Suck and Feed, have been handed an indefinite suspension, caused in part by their money-gobbling MetaFilter-knockoff kid brother Plastic. It's a sad sad day for quality content on the web. In fact, it's almost enough to inspire one to start a webzine of one's own.

Connecticut investigates phony movie critic:"Brainsluice comes up trumps with an explosive new design!" - David Manning
"We give this practice two thumbs down," [Connecticut State Attorney General] Blumenthal said Tuesday. "It could be deceptive and misleading advertising.""Yes, Columbia, there is a David Manning":
He exists as certainly as merchandising and box-office receipts exist, and you know that they abound and give you fancy cars and houses in the Hollywood Hills. He exists in such blurb-ready words as "mesmerizing" and "triumphant," and in the magical phrases "this year's 'Rocky'" and "a nonstop roller coaster ride."
