Small town American lesbiteen is stopped from participating in gym class when the authorities find out she likes girls. And what town would that be? Banning, CA. How appropriate.

What's better than a beautiful summer's day in Wellington? Your boss letting you off at 3:30, that's what.

Middle Earthian madness descended on Wellington today with the New Zealand premiere of LOTR: The Two Towers. I missed the hubbub due to a conscious effort to complete my Christmas shopping but as the bus diverted away from Courtenay Place in its entirety, it was possible to catch a glimpse of the throngs. Then I got home and it was all over the end of the news so I got a nice bird's eye view anyhoo. And of course, there was the requisite controversy - New Zealand Film Commission bosses were uninvited to the premiere after a spat concerning debts tallied up by a now defunct production company (story here). The take home message kids? Do not fuck off Peter Jackson.

My friend job had perhaps one of the best jobs in the world when the movies were being made - he got to rove all over the set for several months, reporting for E! Online. He's also recently done a nice (albeit uncredited) interview with Mr Jackson over at lordoftherings.net ... go see, go see!

Hot off the presses: Peter Jackson will "personally ensure" that Wellington host's the world premiere of LOTR: The Return of the King (story here). Now that's going to be huge.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

... as the meteorologically incongruous festive jingle currently employed by Farmers goes. It hasn't been flaking it outside but it's certainly been a cold-shiver-hot-flush kind of December, as a certain recently departed visitor would tell you. Nevertheless, all things festive have well and truly descended upon this corner of the world: big sparkly lights festoon the city's towers, fake snow in shop windows battles it out with sunbathing Santas, and the unwashed masses line the streets in search of that elusive bargain. I'm pleased to report that my shopping is now all but done so I can relax a little and look forward to the break ... it'll be goodbye to Wellington on Christmas Eve and hello to the South Island's lower reaches once more, to spend the festive season with a whole lot of family, friends and other assorted reprobates. Food will be gorged, booze will be quaffed and many dubious stories will no doubt be told. Sheer bliss.

From the staff bulletin board today:

Anyone going to Christchurch?
"I have been asked to try to find a "ride" to Christchurch for a racing pigeon who needs relocated after a recent stint in the North Island. If you are travelling down by car or plane and would be willing to take a small bird in a small box as luggage please contact me. She doesn't need delivered anywhere, just released from the box in the general area of Canterbury and she will head home herself."

If only they'd asked on Friday!

Happy happy happy ... joy joy joy! Dan and Stephen are getting unmarried, and it honestly couldn't happen to two nicer blokes - shooting the breeze and slurping on G&Ts with them in the Rooster's back garden on a languid summer evening in Queens was one of the best moments of my stay in New York.

For those who are interested, the boy is alive and well - I've deposited him in the South Island for a few days so he can broaden his horizons a little bit! We had a big night out on Friday and then took off to Christchurch for the weekend, staying with the host-with-the-most, Gary - an old workmate of mine from BT days. We took a drive over to Sumner for lunch, then wound our way back into the city via Lyttleton and the Port Hills, took in the Arts Centre market, drank and played pool at the Dux-de-Lux and met another old jobpal Justine. A few of the city's snappier bars were also taken in later that evening (Foam, Sanguine and Home) and Sunday was spent enjoying a leisurely brunch and wandering the surprisingly quiet downtown streets. A good weekend was had by all!

Well, it's December all ready and that can only mean one thing ... Christmas is on the way. Last year, we celebrated at ickle.org with a trio of festively-themed entries in the final week: the baby jesus, brussels sprouts and cranberries. This time, Meg and I decided to go the whole hog and fill the whole month with the best and worst little things that make this time of year so memorable. First up? Fairy lights.

And the surprise dinner guest was ... Mr Iain Croll! Yep, the lad caught us totally off guard by announcing on Friday night that he'd be over here on Sunday morning - talk about impulsive :) We picked him up at the airport on a wonderfull sunny morning then shot up quickly to the Mt Victoria lookup en route to the flat. Then it was off into town for a picnic on the waterfront and a barbeque later that evening at the House of A.R.T. to farewell Aaron's beau Mark who is back off to San Francisco for a few months. So, a surprising weekend all told - it's going to be a lot fun showing our guest just a taste of what this fine little colony has to offer.
