At around 5:30pm on Thursday, New Zealand hit the big four-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, making us the 161st most populous nation in the world. We're expected to peak at 4,810,000 in 2046. It's also significant insofar as the mark was reached the day before Anzac Day, the generally accepted date for the nation's "coming of age", where in 1915 our lads hurled themselves against a cliff in Turkey and were promptly massacred.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
