The brain is a wonderfully resilient thing ... take Mr Phineas Gage for example. A railroad worker in mid-1800s America, Phineas had the misfortune accidentally send an explosive-powered tamping iron right through his head. Sure, he suffered a radical personality re-jig, but he lived to tell the tale (for about another 12 years at least).
