Pohutukawa, the Kiwi Christmas tree

And before we hit that day of days, it just remains for me to offer all those souls who somehow find themselves reading these words, the very best of festive greetings and heartfelt wishes for a happy, safe and enjoyable holiday break. Eat. Drink. Be merry. You deserve it. See you on the other side ...

Mr Jackson (no, not the surgically-altered one, the hirsuite and bare-footed one) ... take a bow. Herb had jacked up a whole cinema for a fairly-near-to-opening screening of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, so we went along for a look-see ...

Wow.

It's difficult to know where to start really. Yes, it's long, but not distractingly so. Yes, there's a lot going on, but that's in no way a bad thing. Very sweeping ... very grand ... very touching really. It seems silly to be so attached to a group of movies but I really think this is our generation's Hillary-conquers-Everest ... Peter Jackson certainly knocked the bastard off and gave all Noozlelanders something to be immensely proud of. Well done that man.

They don't call it the silly season for nothing. As the big day approaches, I'm feeling somewhat tired but not fully so ... a good thing given that there are a decent number of days before the holiday season winds down, and that these days are likely to be filled with a combination of roast and barbecue meats, various aunts and uncles and grandparents, the odd splash of liquor, even more assorted cousins, presenty things and an occasional hangover or two. It's a heady combination, I assure you.

Happy Global Jewellery-Related Movie Initial Screening Day! Yep, today was Wellington's big day in the sun (quite literally) as all and sundry turned out to celebrate the launch of our favourite son's new talkie, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Alas, I was stuck inside - slaving away like some accursed orc, attempting to get a paper finished - but I did manage to duck out in time to see the Air New Zealand 747-400 (with wingtips!) do a 300 metre fly-over. Impressive stuff.

Kyle took advantage of the sunny weather and headed down to where the action was ... pushing aside small children and big-bottomed women hanging from trees to bring you these exclusive pics - "The King returns, Part 1" (the creatures) and "The King returns, Part 2" (the celebs). Enjoy, my preccciooussssesss!
