Happy birthday to me, and all that. Had a fine old time on Saturday - gathered together the assorted Wellington crew (friends old and new, acquaintances of various descriptions and some stalwart work colleagues) for a bit of a party at Tupelo, and spent a great time mixin' and minglin' and being spoilt thoroughly rotten by everyone. All good stuff!

Today - the big three-oh itself - was fun too ... to work for the day, but a massively chocolate-laden morning tea made it all go faster, lunchtime was spent browsing games for the new PS2 (a big thanks Kyle!) and buying a tester DVD for the new burner (gadgets a-hoy), and then to dinner with Travis at Nani and Jason's. A very pleasant way to enter the new decade I must say!

There's something particularly unsettling about the Subservient Chicken, like when Twin Peaks' Bob comes over the couch or that little smirk The Omen's Damien does before he does something really unsavoury. *Shudder*. It's definitely enough to put one off any eating any Burger King poultry concoction ever again.

"We've seen examples of all sorts of ways of sneaking subversive messages into product packaging and advertisements — everything from blurting out words in foreign languages during the filming of commercials to encoding statements as acrostics, but this is a first for us: concealing a dissentious notice in a product's washing instructions tag."

Had a very nice lunch yesterday with Magnus and Rachel, long time AOLers and reasonably recent escapees from the London madness. Meg, Iain, Scally, et al - you'll be pleased to know they're doing really well, Magnus has a new job with Telecom and Casper is the cutest thing ever to eat raisins. Oh, and the Kirks gift vouchers were finally delivered too, with which they seemed very pleased and appreciative!

The ever erudite Russell Brown presents a snapshot of the current media chatter around the proposed civil union legislation. Thank goodness for right-thinking individuals!

After a recent topsy-turvy spell (we live in interesting political times), the Civil Union Bill appears to be back on track. Watch this space for developments as they unfold ...

One from the creative-excuses-for-speeding book: "I was just blow-drying my car officer!"

And from today's catalogue-o-delights, under the "sometimes analogue really is better than digital" category:

Does the world really need a "remote controlled high-tech replacement for the traditional Whoopee Cushion"? What's wrong with tradition? Tradition is good, even if it doesn't come with "3 different realistic fart noises". Hell, even cupping your palm under your armpit and pumping away is eight thousand times more entertaining that pushing a button. I despair for the youth of today, I really do.

I'm sure Sarah will join me in offering a hearty welcome back to TV2's Eating Media Lunch, the Jeremy Wells vehicle which so subtley, fondly and effectively pokes a sharp stick into the metaphorical eye of New Zealand's meeja. It's a pity about TVNZ's lame excuse for a tie-in though (cf. Mikey Havoc's efforts) ... why let content clutter up your valuable advertising space?
