One of the great things about this flat is the large lemon tree which has its roots on the neighbour's side of the fence, but decides to bear most of its fruit on ours. I like to think of it as a happy little accident of nature. Anyway, because it's such a shame to let such a good crop go to waste, I decided to crank out some lemon cordial and quite nice it is too. So here's the recipe:
Dave's Lemon Cordial
1.5kg sugar
25g citric acid
15g tartaric acid
2 litres boiling water
juice of 8 lemons
grated zest of 4 lemons
Place the sugar, citric acid and tartaric acid in a large bowl (non-metallic is probably best). Pour over boiling water and stir to dissolve. Add lemon juice and zest and stir. Cover and refrigerate overnight to let the flavours infuse. Bottle and store in the fridge. Makes around 4 litres of cordial (which you can kick up a notch with a splash of soda water and a slug of your favourite gin).
Simple and delicious! And very good for festive gifties too.

As far as sleepy old New Zealand goes, today's been a pretty tumultuous day. After a two-year detention, Algerian asylum seeker Ahmed Zaoui was released on bail by the Supreme Court. As I type this, punters have one minute left to legally smoke in bars, clubs and restaurants. But perhaps most significantly, the Civil Union Bill finally passed, allowing same- and different-sex couples to register their relationship and enjoy the rights and responsibilities of otherwise only granted to married folk. Good stuff it is too.
But not if you listen to the Chicken Littles of this country. Apparently society will collapse around our ears and buggery rates will hit an all time high. Well folks, the plain and simple truth is that life will go on, a not insignificant number of people will get the equivalent of a basic right which most others take for granted, and we'll all get back to caring about more important things. Like what to wear to the office Christmas party and whether baby pink is the new black.

Okay, so I should have been a little more like Undercover Cody today (that turtle is so gosh darn wise), while partaking of a genteel afternoon of lawn bowls for our group's Christmas celebration. With a pulsating forehead like this, who needs Christmas decorations? Ouch.
And speaking of matters festive, the lovely Meg and Anna are back with a whole new heaping handful of seasonal riffing at 'Tis the Season. There's even 'Tis cards this year, which I had a minor hand in and which Meg gave me far too much credit for, bless 'er. Knock yourselves out kids!
